Update RLGA support

25/01/2012

On the basis of the responses to the questionnaire that ARIAL sent out to all Local Government Associations in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, the decision was taken to support the 4 existing Regional Local Governments Associations for the Caribbean, West Africa, East and Southern Africa. In the Pacific and Central Africa no regional umbrellas exist. All 4 have been enabled to recruit 2 staff members, to draw up a 2-year work plan and to strengthen their functioning on the basis of a needs’ assessment.

So, the East African Local Government Association in Arusha (Tanzania) recruited 2 staff members in November 2011, Jerome Byukusenge and Baraka Damas Marandu, and will be helped to draw up a new Strategic Plan. The regional umbrella for West Africa, WARO in Abuja (Nigeria) recruited 2 staff members in November 2011, Alhassan Ziblim Al-Hassan and Iradath Badirou Liamidi, and will be assisted in getting WARO up and running. At the Caribbean umbrella, CALGA, recruitment is going on. The same applies for SARO.

In each of the 4 RLGAs the 2 staff will be instrumental in guiding the Local Government Associations in the region in improving their use of development opportunities, in assisting the Local Governments in their respective countries and improving their lobby and communication skills.
