Training for LGAs at the National and Regional level

18/10/2011

In November and December 2011, the ARIAL programme offers the first set of regional training sessions which aim at strengthening the capacity of local government associations in knowing and influencing development policies and development programmes of national institutions and international partners.

Local government associations are established in order to function – among other things – as representative bodies of local governments towards national and international institutions. The ARIAL programme aims at strengthening this advocacy and lobby role – among other things - by organizing two regional trainings: the first aiming at improving the dialogue between local government associations and national/international institutions, and the second training aiming at improving the dialogue between local government associations and local governments.

During the training local government associations will be provided with the necessary knowledge on how to assume their role as representative body for the local governments in the dialogue on development policies with national institutions and development partners (especially the EU). The local government associations will learn about the basic roles of these organisations, as well as the content of the existing policies/projects and upcoming programming concerning local governments.

During the training, following questions will be answered:

·  What relevant national institutions and development partners are there per country?
·  How to analyse the policies and upcoming programming of the national institutions and development partners?
·  How to respond to these policies/programming while keeping the interests of the local government in mind?
·  What are the development possibilities for local government associations?
·  How to increase recognition of local government associations and local governments in their roles as development actors by the national government  and development partners?

There are six training sessions organized: one for each region of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States. The basic information is provided below. More extensive information on the specific programmes will be provided in time.
