|
On the basis of the responses to the questionnaire that ARIAL sent out to all Local Government Associations in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, the decision was taken to support the 4 existing Regional Local Governments Associations for the Caribbean, West Africa, East and Southern Africa. In the Pacific and Central Africa no regional umbrellas exist. All 4 have been enabled to recruit 2 staff members, to draw up a 2-year work plan and to strengthen their functioning on the basis of a needs’ assessment. The regional umbrella for West Africa, WARO in Abuja (Nigeria) recruited 2 staff members in November 2011, Alhassan Ziblim Al-Hassan and Iradath Badirou Liamidi, and will be assisted in getting WARO up and running. At the Caribbean umbrella, CALGA, recruitment is going on. The same applies for SARO. Â

ARIAL supports four regional local government associations (RLGAs), namely CALGA (Caribbean), EALGA (Eastern Africa), SARO (Southern Africa) and WARO (Western Africa). RLGAs play an important role in supporting and strengthening local government associations in their region. For one, they increase the professional level of these LGAs by providing training and guidance. Also they stimulate mutual learning by offering their members a platform for knowledge exchange. Next to these knowledge distribution functions, an RLGA also represents its members at the regional and international level. In ARIAL the regional umbrellas play an important role in the organization of the regional trainings and assist in individual LGA trainings. However, to perform these tasks the RLGAs need to be solid organizations. Therefore they receive support from the ARIAL programme. |
