| GENERAL INFORMATION ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT |
Â
The administrative subdivisions of the Republic of Grenada consist of 6 parishes, one of them being the parish of St. George with the country’s capital St. George’s. Two smaller islands; Carriacou and Petite Martinique have the status of dependency. Grenada has no local government system making all local affairs a direct responsibility of the central Ministry of Housing, Lands and Community Development. The two dependencies however have their own council the functions of which are prescribed by national government. Local administrators are appointed by central government, which was most recently elected in 2008 for a period of 5 years.
Â
Â
In recent years local government on Grenada has been in the ascendency with discussions about the set-up of parish councils in order to achieve better popular representation. There is also discussion about widening the constitutional provisions on local government on Carriacou and Petite Martinique to all of Grenada.
Â
National government is working closely with international donors and expert organizations on local government in the creation of several seminars and discussion forums. Local government is being put forward as ‘a clear path to self-determination’. At the moment implementation of fully fledged local government on the two dependency islands is progressing. Future focus on legal and governmental reforms would make local government an integral part of government all over Grenada.
